A Post Is Not A Ghost (APINAG) is a talk series that educates teenagers, parents, and employees about best practices on Social Media. Topics include What NOT to Post, Cyber Bullying, Predators/Sex Trafficking, and so much more. APINAG’s mission is to make the digital space a safe place for all who participate.
Teaching Children and Young Adults
Is the best practices for social media use in addition to ways to reduce the risk of exploitation are important now more than ever. In 2018, a study by Pew Research Center found that in 2018, 78% of 18- to 24-year-olds used Snapchat, 71% used Instagram, and 45% used Twitter. And just think that was before the TikTok EXPLOSION; As of 2019 69% of TikToc’s demographic is a female between 13-24-year-old. Fast forward to 2020 with a national health crisis that limits in-person interactions to virtual/ online communicating measures, social media users are at an even greater risk.
Social Media Platforms
These are tools that are essentially used for fun communication with family and friends or even resources of news or information. However there is a dark side to all the wonders of Social Media, it provides unlimited access to content and opportunity for interactions with individuals from almost anywhere globally. Oftentimes free of charge, they serve as resources for artists, businesses, municipalities, non-profits, and other organizations. Thousands of people use social media as the main source for news, politics, and for obtaining other important information. When misused, however, these platforms present the ability to cause lasting damage to an individuals’ reputation, impacting their future socially, academically, or even professionally. For example, identity thief, fraud, and human sex trafficking are just a few illegal activities that are known to occur on social media. How do you decrease the victimization? You empower users of these threats and risks so that they can easily identify and avoid exploitative situations
